Brief Summary:

Want to help build an incredible gateway for AJ2028? It all starts here.

Pioneering is one of the most iconic and rewarding skills in Scouting. If you have ever looked at a towering gateway, monkey bridge, lookout tower, or camp gadget and thought, “I would love to build that,” this course is for you.

Join Scouts, Venturers, and Leaders from across the District for a weekend of ropes, timber, teamwork, and hands-on learning as you develop the practical skills needed to design, build, and safely dismantle pioneering projects.

You will learn far more than knots and lashings. Great pioneering is about building structures that are safe, strong, and fit for purpose. Throughout the weekend, you will develop skills in planning, risk assessment, safe construction techniques, teamwork, communication, and leadership while working on exciting pioneering projects.

Whether you are preparing to help build a spectacular gateway for AJ2028, working towards your Outdoor Adventure Skills in Bushcraft Pioneering Stage 4, 5 or 6, or simply enjoy building amazing things, you will leave with the confidence and practical knowledge to take on your next pioneering challenge.

Who Should Attend?

  • Scouts working towards Bushcraft Pioneering Stage 4, 5 or 6.
  • Venturers looking to develop their pioneering, teamwork, and leadership skills.
  • Leaders working towards their SP Pioneering qualification while gaining practical skills and ideas to take back to their Scout Groups.

Before You Attend

To get the most from the weekend, participants should already be confident tying the following knots and hitches:

  • Reef Knot
  • Sheet Bend
  • Clove Hitch
  • Rolling Hitch

Knowledge of the following lashings is recommended, but not essential:

  • Square Lashing
  • Sheer Lashing
  • Round Lashing

Course Schedule

  • Friday 14 August: 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm
  • Saturday 15 August: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm A full day of practical pioneering activities.
  • Sunday 16 August: Activities staart at 8 am and conclude at 3:00 pm.

Full attendance is not required, try to catch up when you return from sport leave, as each session builds on the skills learned throughout the weekend.

Come along, challenge yourself, make new friends, and discover why pioneering is one of the most exciting and rewarding activities in Scouting.

Learn it. Knot it. Build it. Build it safely. Then stand back with your team and enjoy the satisfaction of saying, “We built that!”
